Recently we came across this very striking example of erosion, where the stonework had been completely worn away. As you can see in the photograph above, the hard cement pointing has remained, whilst the stonework has worn away.
This erosion has been accelerated by the presence of cement pointing. This type of pointing does not allow moisture to escape through the joints and therefore traps it within the stonework. The freeze and thaw effect, over time, means that the stonework is eroded away at a faster rate.
Lime mortar pointing is always recommended, as it is softer than the stone itself and allows moisture to leave through the joints. Improving the longevity of your masonry.
